Nasir; Robin of Sherwood

Nasir the Saracen from the old but splendid British TV series: ‘Robin of Sherwood’. This was the first version to have a Saracen or Moor in it; here played by Mark Ryan.

The large tree on the left is the ‘Major Oak of Sherwood’ in Nottingham, still standing today and firmly linked with the ‘Robin in the Hood’ mythos.
In the distant right are hints of the Holy Lands: Masyaf Castle, supposedly held by the Hashshashin (Assassins) at the end of the 12th century; and beyond that, the Great Mosque of Damascus. His crossed swords point to both places.
The style of lettering (bottom left corner) is from a 12th century English illuminated manuscript. Huzzah for details.
20 x 28 cms, mixed media, all done by hand (not digital).
