Smaug, the Unassessably Wealthy

Smaug, Soni Alcorn-Hender

Smaug

‘Smaug the Terrible’ dragon from the (film-version) of The Hobbit.
In his treasure are actual little gems, a tiiiny Arkenstone, and enough 22k gold leaf to even satisfy a Dwarf, briefly.

This shiny, jewel-encrusted wyrm will be one of the prizes in my art giveaway for the winner to choose from! Keep an eye on my Facebook page to see the other art prizes as they’re finished, and then for the contest itself afterwards!

Work in progress:

LotR gilded landscape sketch cards

Lots of experimentation went into these tiny Middle-earth landscapes. All of them have handmade borders made from pieces of filigree, and then gilded in gold or silver with a few tiny crystals.

All cards measure 2.5×3.5 inches. Stickers, cards and shiny things of them can be found here. :)

For the ‘Shire’ card I went back to a technique I tried for the first time with a Star Wars set (for Topps here) but made even shinier with all the bright colours of Hobbiton. Crystal flakes, sequins, and individual bits of glitter were pressed into glass glaze.

Radagast the Brown

I did this as an indulgence just because I think Sylvester McCoy has a glorious face, and I loved the idea of framing Radagast with lovely living things.
This is the movie version of Radagast-ish, but without the bird poo etc. because he’s better than that.

And here’s how he was done. :)

Thranduil throned

Thranduil throned, by Soni Alcorn-Hender

Finished: Thranduil upon his throne,
Acrylics, gold leaf, red crystals (in his crown), and sass: 8.3×11.5″

In his crown alone there’s so much gold leaf that dragons are gathering outside my studio. Though they’re poor appreciators of art, they just sit on it.

Prints and pretty things available here.

31-Day Art Challenge, day 5

31 Days of drawing, Day 5. The prompt: ‘A movie/TV character drawn in a cartoony way

Even though he’s first and foremost a book character, the movie version makes a good subject: Thranduil.
As a ‘cartoon’ it’s a failure: too many lines by about five-bajillion lines, and peculiarly Byzantine, but I like it anyway. :) But I still (really) need to practise drawing cartoons and other simplified, non OCD things.

Hobbit Illuminations, finished :)

Hobbit ‘Illuminations’: with European medieval illuminations and bookplates as an inspiration, this was an experiment to create illustrations that might look like they came from the books of Middle-earth itself.

LotR & Hobbit larger works (book inspired)

My new, fledgling little gallery for larger, book-inspired landscapey-scenic art for LotR and the Hobbit. I loved doing these. Must do more.
